Fracture-Proof Your Bones: A comprehensive guide to osteoporosis

By Dr. John Neustadt, ND

Consumer Health Education

Osteoporosis is a global epidemic that steals years from people's lives and upends their finances. A woman is just as likely to get an osteoporosis fracture as she is to get breast, uterine and ovarian cancer, and every three seconds someone with osteoporosis breaks a bone. People spend more time in a hospital because of osteoporosis than for diabetes, heart attacks and breast cancer. But the conventional approach to osteoporosis is woefully inadequate. It focuses almost exclusively on improving bone density, even though a bone density test only predicts 44% of women and 21% of men who will break a bone. It doesn't have to be this way.

This book will teach you:

- How to EVALUATE your medications to see if they're destroying your bones and increasing your fracture risk.

- How to TALK to your doctor about osteoporosis drugs to make sure you're getting the best possible care.

- How to MAINTAIN STRONG BONES with an integrative approach that includes diet, sleep, lifestyle changes, exercise and dietary supplements.

With an understanding of these underlying factors in place, the book goes on to outline the most effective lifestyle, dietary, environmental methods along with supplements (vitamins, minerals, botanicals), and mind-body therapies for anxiety and depression. It discusses how to work integratively when a client is already on an anxiolytic or antidepressant is also covered. A final chapter explains exactly how to make recommendations and design a successful treatment plan best suited to your client.

Naturopathic Physicians: Whole Health Specialists in Whole Person Care

By Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine Institute

Professional Education

One of the basic assumptions in science is that nature is organized, ordered and inherently has recognizable regularity. Since naturopathic therapies respect nature and all it has to offer patient healing, it follows that this same regularity and order should be reflected in the way naturopathic principles are applied. The therapeutic order is based on the idea that the human form possesses an inherent drive to heal itself.

The least possible amount of force should be employed when in the patient’s best interest in order to promote gentle safe and long-lasting health and well-being. The therapeutic order characterizes the natural order that naturopathic therapies can be utilized in order to maximize benefit and reduce the potential for damage or harm.

The therapeutic order works from least to most invasive intervention, and works from the inside out, from more general strategies removing causative factors, and establishing an environment conducive to health to optimize the overall healing process, to more symptomatic, specific and targeted therapies. It includes seven steps that should be applied from the bottom up, increasing in intervention as needed to restore health. Central to the therapeutic order is that the order is not rigid, it is adapted to each patient, yet follows this pattern overall, most efficiently to “treat disease by restoring health.”
